This is heartbreaking to me, because I know there are incredible charter schools operating in the city of Chicago. They should be working in tandem with public schools as part of one larger system of education, not scrambling for scraps. I feel like this Larry Hirsh's piece in the Huffington Post blog gives fair and honest commentary on the benefits and problems of charter schools. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-hirsch/between-the-extremes-on-charter-schools_b_4160817.html
"In a perfect world, none of us would be playing games with the test scores and all schools would work together to figure out what's best for the kids.
Alas, we don't live in Perfect. We live in Chicago, where Mayor Emanuel's making our school funding crisis even worse by diverting public money for his TIF schemes.
It's like a war out there, with charters fighting public schools for whatever funding they can get. As in any war, the first casualty is truth."
Unfortunately though, the people stuck at the center of this warfare are the students...and they suffer the most of the consequences, dealing with the effects of these issues. I think that, is what is most heart wrenching for me...and so the inequality continues.

We should all be working towards the same goal which is to educate and prepare our youth to be productive and intelligent citizens.
